Hello everybody. The weekend is here, which means things are pretty quiet at the orphanage. Not a whole lot going on, people coming and going, etc. I took advantage of that today by going to the mall to go see a movie - Iron Man 2, followed by a nice meal at Wendy's. I felt refreshingly American after that. I found it interesting that a ticket to go see Iron Man 2 cost 60 lempiras - a little more than $3, while getting a small soda and M&M's cost 62 lempiras. Also, at Wendy's in Honduras, they actually make the food while you wait, as in putting the burger on the grill (or whatever that economy sized cooker is called) and cooking it while you watch, which meant my burger was nice and fresh. The movie was more or less what I expected - a fun popcorn-type flick, but nothing to write home about (or maybe it is, because I'm doing just that...). Seeing Robert Downey, Don Cheadle, Mickey Rourke, Scarlett Johansenn, Gwyneth Paltrow and the ever-present Samuel L. Jackson almost made me forget I was in Honduras! (Except for the Spanish subtitles running across the bottom of the screen.)
Tomorrow, I will be going to Tela, the city to the north of El Progreso that has...beaches! So tomorrow will be a beach outing, which should be fun, assuming that I don't get roasted by the sun. As promised here are some pictures of the kids. I forgot to get some basketball related pictures, but I think there are still some nice ones.

I'll try and get some more varied pictures this week, and if I do, I'll post them. Hope everybody's doing well! Adios.
Msn - you look a guy helping the kids. How cool is that? Thanks for the photos. Glad you had a dose of norte-americanoisma with the flick and the meal. Must be jarring to see that on the screen and walk out into el progreso. Mom is not here tonight so I will say it for her - wear your your sunscreen tomorrow!! Have fun and keep up the great work. We miss you

You'll have to forgive Dad's typos...he's getting old (it's supposed to be "Man, you look like a guy..."). Rachel and I are back from seeing LaSalle's production of "Little House of Horrors." Very good! Now that I'm back I can say for myself, "wear sunscreen!".

And a hat. And sunglasses. And don't forget to put sunscreen on your ears and on the tops of your feet. How funny that you've already seen Iron Man II -- and such a bargain! Our local multi-plex is up to $10.50 now. The kids look like they're having fun with you -- they probably appreciate having a new face around, not to mention a new someone to play with. That little girl working on her numbers reminds me of a first grader in my class -- still sweet and hard working. By the time they get to 4th grade they're not that interested in pleasing the teacher! (And yes, your father's observations are razor sharp!I think you look like a guy too.)
ReplyDeleteHi Ben,
ReplyDeleteThis is Rebecca. We'll see if they let me post from Kyra's Google account. She's off singing in two concerts this afternoon. We're enjoying hearing about what you're doing and seeing the photos. From my several stays in Germany I know how mind-bending it can be at times to be immersed in another culture and language. Wouldn't trade those experiences though and glad you're getting to do this as your sr project. Some of us (R-Ms) may go on a service trip to a Guatemalan orphanage with my sister's church in the fall. We'll have to get some advice from you. Rebecca
